LILY KEMP

Lily Kemp (b. 1997) is a visual artist based in London. Since graduating in 2019 with a BA in Fine Art Painting from Wimbledon College of Arts, she Kemp has gone on to win the Lim Ai Fang Art Prize at the Woon Foundation and was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2020.

With an underlying interest in exploring alternative narratives around how women’s bodies are portrayed/consumed in Western art history and visual culture, particularly in response to how women’s bodies are sexualised, exoticised, and sexualised, Kemp’s paintings explore themes of femininity, nature and more recently, intimacy, relationships and journey. Interested in what happens when you repurpose found images and drawing from the hyper-idealised scenes/landscapes found in socialist realist work, she interweaves images of women from fashion magazines alongside images of agricultural and natural landscapes and her own photographs. Her figures are situated in these imagined worlds and dream-like realities as both familiar, yet also bordering on the performative and theatrical.
