TOMAS HARKER
Tomas Harker’s painting address the nature of meaning in conditions of mediated experience. Sources are treated indiscriminately of hierarchical values, collected from varied systems of image production and distribution. These include film screen shots, iPhone photos, art history and social media. The materiality of painting is used to interrupt the groundlessness of semiotic free-fall. Subjectivity and histories behind images are drawn upon, exploring new sets of associations. The paintings often have a sense of ambivalence, resisting easy travel as non-linear narratives are subsequently created. Tomas is a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art and was included in New Contemporaries in 2021.
